Okay so, you just got engaged! Yay! Now the planning begins, and part of that planning is getting your engagement photos done. This is such an exciting part of the planning process, but it’s normal to feel a little nervous, too! Two of the most common things I hear from couples are, “We’ve never done this before!” and “Please tell us what to do!”. The good news is, you don’t have to be a model or know what to do. You just need to show up ready to have fun! With a little prep and me – your awesome photographer – by your side, your engagement session can feel more like a date night than a photoshoot. Here are some of my favorite tips to make you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to make the most of your session.
CHOOSE OUTFITS THAT FEEL LIKE YOU
Inspiration is nice, but remember you don’t need to look like a couple you saw on Pinterest. Wear something you feel confident in, and coordinate colors instead of exactly matching. Avoid large logos or distracting patterns, but don’t be afraid to pick something fun if it feels more like you. I usually recommend couples bring one casual outfit and one dressier outfit. Neutral colors always photograph beautifully, but adding pops of color like pink or coral, light blues, greens, even yellows can elevate the look depending on the location! Consider pieces and fabrics that catch the breeze, like flowy dresses or linen shirts! I also recommend trying your outfits on prior to the session to make sure you love them, and bring a couple backups just in case!

INCLUDE AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU TWO LOVE
Perhaps you love cooking together, playing cards, or going for bike rides. Maybe you love grabbing ice cream, surfing, or long boarding. Including an activity can add fun and authenticity to your photos. Imagine a flour fight in the kitchen, reading side-by-side in a cafe, or rolling around in the sand before going for a sunset swim. Including an activity not only tells your story, but relieves some nerves by focusing on something you love.

LEAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO GET THERE
I recommend checking your GPS in the days leading up to your session to see how far your drive is and what traffic might look like at the time you need to leave. Try arriving to your session 10-15 minutes early so you have a few minutes to relax and settle in!

DON’T WORRY ABOUT PDA
You don’t have to be overly affectionate if that’s not your thing. But this is a fun chance to love all over your partner as much as you want! I give a variety of fun prompts to keep things natural and playful. Be ready to run, dance, frolic, cuddle, spin, and give all the kisses humanly possible!

And most importantly…trust that you’re in good hands and remember why you’re there in the first place! This is about capturing your love story and preserving it for years to come. It’s not about perfection, it’s about documenting this season. Laugh together. Be yourselves. Don’t stress about all the little details. People remember how they felt more than whether every hair was in the right place.
